Since 1967 there have been almost 7 million abortions, now 200,000 a year, with one in four pregnancies ending in abortion. The 1967 Abortion Act is open to amendment during the passage of the current HFE Bill, so there is now a genuine opportunity to reduce abortion numbers. We must be alert as well to the agenda of the pro-choice activists, abortion providers and some MPs who will push for further liberalisation of the law.
The world has gone mad!
Recently I have been in the situation where a young girl of under 15 and her boyfriend (who was younger than her) came to see myself and a colleague as she was pregnant. Scared and alone they looked for help, advice and support in reviewing their choices. We enlisted our friends at Oasis, a non-directional crisis pregnancy organisation. The discussions with these very young potential parents took weeks during which time she was advised of her choices.
During this time I learned that even at thie very young age she was able to choose to take the morning after pill (had she thought of it in time), she could have had a chemical abortion or a surgical abortion all without here parents consent. The thing that shocked me most was when, during the decision process the young lady concerned was advised by her doctor to take some Folic acid to help the baby should she choose to keep it. However, when she went with the father to Superdrug to collect her prescription they would not let her without a parent!
What madness is this! That a child can terminate a baby in so many ways without parental consent yet should that same child wish to keep, or even as in this case, consider keeping it every obstacle is put in front of them!
Petition
200,000 abortions a year in Britain is far too many and I believe that we should urge Parliament to SUPPORT amendments to the Abortion Act which will reduce substantially the 24 week upper time limit, end discriminatory abortion of the disabled up until birth, and provide balanced evidence-based information, independently of the abortion service, that gives women a properly informed choice, along with the offer of counseling (Such as the Oasis counselling we used in the case described above). Not to force or coerse a particualr decision by, in a non-directional way, outline all the options.
There are also proposals seeking to amend and liberalise further the law that curretnly require two doctors to sign the necessary paperwork. This would then allow “nurse led” chemical abortions in GP Surgeries with completion at home. This essentially circumvents any possibiluity of Pro-life doctors ever having the possiblity of being involved!
